Den of Diamonds

Flash fiction

· Short fiction

I’m sitting with my back against the wall, my legs dangling off of the edge of the building. Looking down across the city, the glittering surface of the planet is covered in a light sheen as the holo display shows a digital record of the train paths. The “Diamond Planet” Thexerus has been suffering from an excess of diamond mining, and I’ve finally caught the trail of some of the people involved to this harbor, tonight. A deal is going to happen, a shipment and money are going to exchange hands, and I am going to be there to catch them.

The display hovering in front of me shows an array of the ships coming in tonight. The harbor is always full with ships bringing in goods and exporting precious metals from just under the planet’s surface. I can see the ships now, far off in the distance, the glittering ground reflecting the flashes of the lights despite the dark night. I hide the visual display away with a wave of my hand. The Delta Miriandynus Galaxy has been enduring for long enough now. I’ve tracked the shipments here, and now all I have to do is wait.

There’s a rustling sound below me, I can hear hushed voices and the shuffling of feet.

Well, I think, That didn’t didn’t take very long at all.

The figures are moving, it’s my time to act. Run down the edge of the building, jump down onto a pile of crates, and I’m on the ground in front of them.

“What are you doing here?” A sharp, familiar voice commands.

It’s my father.
